A mezuzah, which is Hebrew for doorpost, is a decorative case containing a parchment bearing the words of the Shema, the Jewish core statement of belief, beginning with the phrase: “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our G-d, the Lord is One”. A mezuzah is fixed to the right side door frame in Jewish homes to fulfil the mitzvah (biblical commandment) to inscribe the words of the Shema “on the doorposts of your house”.
